Students experience difficulty of being home bound for extended time

This past semester there have been a few students who have been home bound due to recent surgeries that they had to undergo. They are now back as of the beginning of the second semester,  but the experiences they had to go through were very different.

Junior Jessica Hollin and freshman Andrew Brandon both had surgery during the first semester. Hollin had to undergo back surgurey and is out for the rest of swimming season and Brandon underwent chest surgery where he wasn’t able to have physical contact for an extended period of time.  The boredum of being at home for so long put a toll on them and made the experiences just a little bit harder.

Hollin was home bound for around three months during October, November and December. She said it was difficult coming back after three months of being at home.

“It was really different to be at home in the middle of the day,” Hollin said. “For the first few weeks it was nice to not have to do anything, but after a while I was bored and watching TV gets old after a while.”

She also said that even though that she had a personal tutor for the time that she was gone she is still behind in one or two of her classes.

“It was exhausting to go back to my full time schedule after three months of not having to do anything,” Hollin said. “I came home after my first week back and slept for 15 hours… It was nice to have something to do. Swimming, school and all of my activities took a lot of getting used to when I came back.”

Hollin’s friends and family made a big impact on her supporting her and being there for her every step of the way.

”My friends were all wonderful and came to the hospital to visit me, or came over to my house when I got home and were so awesome. They made it really easy to stay in touch,” Hollin said.

The one difficult part about missing so much school was all of the work that she became behind on. Even with a personal tutor during her weeks at home, she still missed being around her peers for help.

”Doing the school work by myself was more difficult, but I didn’t have all the busy work to do,” Hollin said. ”I had an awesome homebound teacher who was really helpful!”

Freshman Andrew Brandon has recently had chest surgery to correct the growth of his ribs. Brandon did (like Hollin) have a home bound tutor for around three of the four weeks he was out of school.

“I have always been used to having people around me when working in school so it was weird to be by myself at home with my tutor,” Brandon said.
