Students strive to balance work, school

Many people argue that junior year is the hardest year in high school. This just so happens to be the year in which many people will get jobs.

Working in high school can be rewarding if you can manage the tradeoffs such as less time for schoolwork and extracurriculars among other things that some just aren’t willing to lose.

“It’s definitely worth it, but it depends on who you ask,” junior Jordan Parada said. “I enjoy my job so I guess it’s easier for me to say that I can handle it while in school”.

Everyone has different experiences and opinions about their occupation which influence their decision if working in high school is worth the stress and time crunches or not.

Additionally, many students are employed by family businesses, which can be more flexible to fit the busy schedules of students.

“Our family runs a moving consignment shop and the hours are definitely more flexible than say working at a fast-food restaurant I guess,” junior Nathan Goode said. “Your parents want you to get good grades, it’s kinda in their interest as well, a manager may not care so they won’t be as flexible but I guess it always depends.”

While there are different types of jobs a student may work in terms of flexibility and hours to make some extra cash, most people agree that school should come first. Students who try to work extra hours usually do so with respect to the time reserved for their school work. Taking off periods can be a great solution for students who find that they may not have enough time for schoolwork or would like to work more hours a week.

“I usually try to keep schoolwork as a priority over work,” Parada said, “If you get more credits than you need for your senior year, you can always get off periods so you’d have more time to work on schoolwork, or even work for that matter. It’s not just about the money also, you get work experience which can help on college applications and future jobs.”

Working during high school can be very difficult. Students face troubles balancing their school and work life, as well as having their work schedules fit around their extracurricular activities. However, working a job in high school can be beneficial not only for students’ wallets but for college admissions and applying to future jobs.

Balancing work and your school life can be an arduous task, however, financial freedom and something you can put on applications down the line in your life makes it all worth it in many peoples’ eyes.
