Long time local restaurant Tio Dan’s Puffy Tacos faced catastrophe in late August of 2017 when a fire broke out and forced the Round Rock staple to close and cost the establishment an estimated amount of $250,000.

This was one of the many challenges for the restaurant’s owner Dan Balderas had to face in his lifetime.

Later that year Balderas would pass away on Nov. 22 at the age of 86.  Known more commonly throughout the Round Rock community as “Tio Dan”, Balderas opened as many as 17 restaurants in Central Texas. However, life hadn’t always been so forgiving and Balderas would soon learn he was going to need to work to make it where he was. During his youth, Balderas grew up in Hutto with his 16 siblings before his family moved to San Antonio. Before his restaurant career, he grew up working as a cotton picker. Eventually while living in San Antonio he would find himself taking a job as a dishwasher at a local restaurant. This experience helped spark his ongoing passion for the food industry and cooking.

However his ability to cook didn’t come easily, he got his start in the kitchen when a cook did not show up to work and the boss put him on the line cooking hamburgers.

Hard work to Balderas had always been a crucial element in making his business. Once he turned 17, he found himself working in food services for the U.S Army, while also putting himself through night school in order to earn his diploma. He would go onto to study business at Durham Business College and St. Phillips College. The education he received would later go on to greatly benefit the management of his future businesses.

‘Tio’ Dan was an impactful figure in the Round Rock community, spreading love and sincere kindness wherever he went. His passing had a major influence on members of the community alongside lovers of his iconic skillfully crafted tacos, burgers, and many other foods.

After his passing, Balderas was recognized by local news stations, newspapers, and even community newsletters.
